Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: Adding Mirrors into your Space

Mirrors are great additions to any space and are not just useful for catching your reflection. They capture light, make your room look larger, create illusions, and overall can tie the space together.

Here are some ways we have installed mirrors and the design decisions we made behind them!

1. Illusion

Here in our design for Marylebone cafe and bar 31 Below, we opted for mirrors to frame the dining spaces. These mirrors create the illusion of other spaces behind as if they are windows. This opens up the space and also helps in creating a ‘larger’ room.

2. Scale

This mirror for Can Chic in Ibiza was chosen for its grand scale which serves to widen and illuminate this corridor space by reflecting the natural light (which is reflected from the walls). Choosing a larger mirror can also create a focal point in a room, but remember it does not have to be a floor mirror! If you opt for a large mirror atop a surface, such as a console table, make sure it is not wider than the surface itself for a well balanced look.

3. Reflection

We love installing mirrors facing the natural views to reflect and bring the outside into the space. This is particularly great in rooms that overlook the sea or landscape - so always take into consideration what your mirrors are framing! This also reflects the outside light back into your space, making it feel airy and larger!

4. Complimentary

Opposites really do attract! Try and use opposite materials, textures and shapes when incorporating any decor pieces. For example, in the 31 Below space, we have chosen for these rust-effect framed mirrors to compliment the timber textures below. Make sure the look is cohesive by using the same tone range.

You can also implement this tip through shape. If you have a lot of sharp, clean lines in your space, try using a rounded mirror to help level things out.

We hope these tips were useful to incorporating mirrors into your own space. Below are links to the projects we have mentioned above.
