Let's get ready for summer! Designer approved tipps for (re) creating your outdoor living spaces

Space and Layout

As a first step, get to know your outdoor surroundings by evaluating the shape and the size. Doesn’t matter if it’s a big or a small space —it’s important to make the most of what you’ve got and therefore understanding your outdoors.

Then, start by defining your focus point or most important feature. Could be a fire place, a beautiful plant or even a view. Think about the amount of square feet you have available and think about how much furniture could fit into the space.

Next, think about the furniture you want to have in the space - if you want to sunbathe, then you will probably need some comfortable lounge furniture. Once you know what you want, continue with the process.

Finally, think about the atmosphere you want to create. There’s no right or wrong, just let your creative mind flow.

Function

As mentioned above, deciding on a function for each space is necessary in order to plan furniture accordingly. You can even divide the spaces.

If you want to host dinner parties, a dining table is key. If you want to spend your time outside alone with a good book, a comfy lounge chair can’t be missing. After deciding on the function, planning will suddenly seem much easier.

Style

Unsure which style to go for? Here’s a tip: Use your own home as a style inspiration. Either decide to match it or to design a completely new dream space.

The variety of outdoor materials is endless: whether it’s wood, metal, fabric or wicker you’re craving - options aren’t limited! Define the feel you have towards the place. This will not only help you to choose furniture and fabric but also brands you want to work with. Take your time and don’t rush finding your perfect outdoor elements.

Accessories

Just as in your indoor spaces, don’t forget about adding the final touches and necessary details. Accessoires help to add your personality to a space. Especially in summer, they can also be functional. Look for items like lanterns, cozy pillows, vases and plants - and even a colourful garden stool can be an accessory at this time of the year.
